analizzando come pulsano le comunità umane all'interno dello spazio fisico -
In architecture, drawing is a tool that has multiple values: narration, study, technical description, and research. Usually, problems and ambiguities arise when these registers overlap.
In its narrative dimension, drawing can overlap with the written text or replace it. In the book *Nelle Città del Mondo*, Giancarlo De Carlo gathered a series of portraits and written reflections on great real, lived-in metropolises, analyzing how human communities pulse within the physical space — whether designed or spontaneous — in which they live.
For De
Carlo, the study of the urban community was not a sociological investigation
for its own sake, but the very matrix of architectural and urban design.
The
language adopted, whether through the written word or the graphic stroke, is
never a neutral tool: it modulates and shapes itself based on the specificities
of the context it is called upon to narrate and interpret.
«The title I proposed for the collection of these writings of mine therefore echoes the one given to Vittorini’s book [*Le città del mondo*]... Only a preposition has been added to warn that its meaning is quite different, that my view is from the inside. However, the analogy remains very strong; it is intentional and I would like it to be taken as a tribute to those friends who have written about cities with emotion» _ G. De Carlo
