Tra il 15 ed il 22 Dicembre si terranno due mostre dei miei lavori in Cina, presso la
Guangzhou Public Library e al
Baiyun International Convention Center.
Presentano i risultati della ricerca che sto sviluppando dal 2013, in collaborazione con il Goethe-Institut, sul rapporto tra città e biblioteche in Germania, attraverso disegni, interviste, testi e schede tecniche dettagliate.
Pochi altri paesi al mondo hanno realizzato negli ultimi decenni, una rete di biblioteche di qualità architettonica così elevata e allo stesso tempo così capillare nella sua diffusione. Un sistema, per altro, destinato ad incrementarsi ulteriormente.
Man mano che procedevamo, si sono chiariti sempre di più i termini ed i fini di questa ricerca, cercando di mettere a fuoco il dialogo tra le città ed i luoghi in cui è custodita la memoria; il rapporto ed i confini tra libro ed informatica; il ruolo urbanistico e sociale di polo di incontro e sviluppo culturale, associato sempre più spesso a gallerie per l'arte, sale per fare e ascoltare musica, aree dedicate al relax o al gioco per i bimbi.
Tutte queste funzioni alternative, stanno progressivamente guadagnando spazio fisico in questi luoghi, anche grazie alla digitalizzazione di una parte importante di testi minori.
L'aspetto che ho trovato più interessante, da architetto, è che il potenziale di questo modo di interpretare un'istituzione pubblica, offre di fatto un modello alternativo in grado di competere, nella sua funzione di catalizzatore sociale, con lo
Junkspace dei mall commerciali, codificato da Koolhaas nel suo
Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping.
The Times They Are A-changin', mi sembra; o almeno, potrebbero.

Lo studio, il viaggio, avevo deciso di iniziarli sopra gli scaffali vuoti del
Memorial for the Book Burning di Micha Ullmann in
Bebelplatz e nelle sale degli
angeli di Wenders nella
Staatsbibliothek a Berlino.
Sono proseguiti poi attraverso edifici eccezionali: macchine per lo sviluppo della cultura realizzate da Foster, Herzog & De Meuron, Dudler, Libeskind, Behnisch - solo per citarne alcuni - fino alle piccole biblioteche itineranti disseminate negli autobus di Amburgo.

Between 15
and 22 December two exhibitions of my work will be
held in China, at the Guangzhou Public Library and at the
Baiyun International Convention Center.
They will present the outcome
of the research that I have been developing since 2013, in collaboration with
the Goethe-Institut, on the relationship
between cities and libraries in Germany, expressed through
drawings, interviews, texts and detailed technical specifications.
Few other
countries in the world have developed, in
recent decades, a network of libraries of such high
architectural quality and yet so extensive and
wide-spread. A system, destined to increase further, parallel to
the implementation of contemporary techniques, medias, issues and changed
needs.
As the work
progressed, we were able to better clarify
the terms and purposes of this research, trying to focus on the dialogue
between the city and the places where memory is kept; the relationship and the boundaries
between books and digital media; the role of an urban and social center for meetings and cultural development, often associated with
galleries for art, studios to make and listen to music,
lounge areas or playground areas for children.
All these alternative functions, are gradually gaining
physical space in these places, thanks also to the digitization of an important
part of minor texts.
What I found most interesting, as an architect, is that the
potential of this way of interpreting a public institution, offers an
alternative model, able to compete, in its function of social meeting and aggregation
pole, against the shopping mall's
Junkspace model, as codified by
Koolhaas in his
Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping.
The
Times They Are A-changin ', it seems to me; or at least, they could be.
Then
continued through exceptional buildings: machines for the development of
culture, produced by Foster, Herzog & De Meuron, Dudler, Libeskind,
Behnisch - among others – all the way to the small mobile libraries
scattered in Hamburg Buses.
